Community Communications Manager

The Recycling Partnership is a rapidly growing, action-focused nonprofit, overhauling the U.S recycling system and activating a circular economy for packaging. We work on the ground with thousands of communities to transform underperforming recycling programs and tackle circular economy challenges. We work with companies to make their packaging more circular and help them meet their climate and sustainability goals. And we work with government to develop the policy solutions that will address the systemic needs of our residential recycling system.

About the Job:

The Community Communications Manager will exert tremendous influence in shaping The Recycling Partnership’s media relations and community communications strategies. Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, the Community Communications Manager will use data-driven approaches and best management practices to craft, implement, and measure an effective, proactive community media relations strategy while simultaneously partnering with community grantees to shape messaging and propose, implement, and evaluate successful communications and education plans that inspire Americans to recycle more, better. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Manager will develop and cultivate relationships with media outlets and reporters and utilize earned and owned media opportunities to implement community-based educational opportunities to help participating communities recycle the right things the right way.

The successful applicant will be highly organized, an exceptional communicator, and a skilled storyteller, possessing the ability to simultaneously plan, track, and collaborate on multiple projects and assignments.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Manager will develop and cultivate relationships with media outlets and reporters and utilize earned and owned media opportunities to implement community-based educational opportunities to help participating communities recycle the right things the right way.

Communications Strategy (45 %)

    • Develop implement, and measure strategies and traditional and new media tactics that serve the individual needs and objectives of our partner communities and The Partnership
    • Develop and manage relationships with media in our partner communities and identified audiences
    • Manage/project manage external contracts and work products with digital and communications vendors

Storytelling (45%)

    • Write blogs, press releases, and social media content in accordance with editorial calendar under the direction of the Director
    • Assist the Director of Communications with production of monthly community newsletter
    • Prepare and deliver presentations at conferences on The Partnership’s behalf
    • Assist the Director with tracking of relevant media contacts and report writing and proactively identifying relations opportunities.
    • Advise internal and external partner/stakeholders, including community program coordinators and project managers, brands on news conference planning and implementation and drafting and/or editing and/or pitching press releases/media advisories
    • Review documents including reports, talking points and other materials for team members from a copyediting perspective.

    • Regularly seek opportunities to improve skills and strengths through professional development opportunities
    • Provide teaching and educational opportunities to others based on subject-matter expertise

Preferred Knowledge, Skillsets and Experience:

    • Superior Writing: Must have the ability to plan, draft, copyedit/proofread, and collaborate on media releases, case studies, reports, website copy, blog posts, and white papers; should be comfortable in understanding various stakeholder needs/angles and shape messages, accordingly, mapping the audience, medium, voice, and timing
    • Brand Image: propel The Partnership’s brand image through consistent messaging and strategy, exercising message disciple and assist in providing message training for team members; should assist in identifying risks and exposures that may impact the brand
    • Media Relations: Must have the ability to develop strong relationships with local, national, and industry publications and reports to facilitate earned media opportunities
    • Campaign Strategy, Implementation/Execution, and Evaluation: Collaboratively determine strategies and tactics that will further the organization’s goals and identified interventions in partner communities; must be able to manage multiple projects and campaigns, including paid, owned, and earned opportunities effectively and simultaneously in multiple communities with multiple stakeholders and audiences
    • Data and Reporting: Responsible for media monitoring and the identification, reporting, and assessment of earned media KPIs and KRAs
    • Social Media: Background with social media scheduling and monitoring in addition to content management systems
    • Language: Fluency in English and Spanish
    • Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree
    • 5 to 7 years-experience developing communications and digital strategy, writing, and project management
    • Knowledge of Sprout Social, MailChimp, and Google Analytics
    • Ability to work together in collaboration as a team
    • Master’s degree preferred
