Media Relations Director

Location: Remote, anywhere within the United States  

Reports to: Chief Marketing and Communications Officer 

The Marketing & Communications team is responsible for building an understanding and awareness of The Partnership’s broad role in advancing recycling and the circular economy through a range of integrated solutions, communicating with a boldness grounded in truth.   

As the Media Relations Director the majority (75%) of your time will be spent on work to raise the profile and visibility of The Partnership through earned media, pitching and placing area experts and The Partnership’s success stories. The remainder of your time (25%) will be spent developing and executing employee communications designed to help employees across the organization stay up to date about the Partnership’s vision, goals, projects and stay connected with each other through internal communications programs.

WHAT WE WILL TRUST YOU WITH – and how you will use your strengths. 

  • Creating and implementing strategies designed to increase understanding and awareness of The Partnership and its work through earned media channels 
  • Handling communications between the Partnership and local, national, international print, television, radio, and internet media outlets, including the preparation and distribution of all press advisories and press releases. Handling any press conferences, media interview requests, and the publicity surrounding our work.  
  • Helping The Partnership’s senior leaders with thought leadership, through the editorial process of publishing opinion pieces and letters to the editor.   
  • Serving as the point of contact for all print, television, and film production inquiries, and evaluates the risks and benefits associated with the Partnership’s involvement.   
  • Working in close partnership with People Operations (perhaps dual reporting) and our CEO to execute communications plans from concept to execution to maintain staff engagement and connectivity. 

AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE & EXPERTISE – things that matter most for this role 

  • A proven track record of creating successful relationships with members of the press (candidate should have existing relationships with reporters and editors at top-tier mainstream outlets as well as some corporate ESG and government /policy publications); 
  • Expertise in creating and implementing strategic media relations plans;  
  • Outstanding skill in drafting talking points, press releases, speeches, media statements, op-eds, and thought leadership content; 
  • Excellent storytelling skills for the production of external and internal content; 
  • Ability to monitor and track media coverage; 
  • Experience creating and executing employee communications plans; 
  • Ability to design content and identify channels for staff communications that drive employee engagement and connectivity

We work on the ground with thousands of communities to transform underperforming recycling programs and tackle circular economy challenges. We work with companies to make their packaging more circular and help them meet their climate and sustainability goals. And we work with government to develop the policy solutions that will address the systemic needs of our residential recycling system.
