Who We Are

The Recycling Partnership is the U.S. nonprofit solving recycling’s toughest challenges, together.

We tackle system challenges that no single company, community, or policymaker can fix alone. By bringing together unmatched insight, the right partners, and practical solutions, we help modernize recycling infrastructure, shape effective policy, and engage the public to build trust in recycling.

We’re not a trade group or think tank. We’re a purpose-driven nonprofit focused on turning collaboration into measurable change.

Our Founding Story

The Recycling Partnership was created from a simple conviction: protecting the places we care about means rethinking how we use and reuse our resources.

In 2014, our founder, Keefe Harrison, recognized that recycling’s biggest challenges weren’t caused by a lack of commitment—they were the result of a fragmented system. No single community, company, or policymaker could solve them alone.

Together with a small group of equally determined changemakers who shared her belief that better systems create better outcomes, Keefe founded The Recycling Partnership. Her vision was ambitious: unite communities, companies, policymakers, recyclers, and other partners around practical solutions that strengthen the entire recycling system.

That collaborative spirit shaped the organization from day one. Rather than simply studying the system or advocating for change, The Recycling Partnership rolled up its sleeves to work alongside the people building it—connecting data with action and bringing together unlikely partners to drive real, tangible impact. Today, that founding vision has grown into one of the nation’s leading nonprofits dedicated to transforming recycling.

More than a decade later, the belief that inspired our founding continues to guide our work: it takes all of us to build a recycling system that works better—for people, for businesses, and for the planet.

Solving recycling’s toughest challenges takes more than one solution.

Recycling is a complex system with interconnected challenges. That’s why we take a systems approach—bringing together communities, companies, policymakers, and industry partners to create practical solutions that deliver lasting results.
  • Modernize the System by investing in infrastructure, expanding recycling access, and strengthening processing.
  • Shape Policy by supporting development and implementation of effective state and national policy.
  • Engage the Public by applying human-centered insights, proven through hundreds of local grants, to capture more recyclables.
  • Drive Innovation through data, research, and strategic partnerships to identify and scale solutions.

Progress you can see. Impact you can measure.

Every partnership, investment, and solution we deliver is designed to strengthen the U.S. recycling system for the long term. Working alongside communities, companies, policymakers, and industry partners, we’ve invested $658 million in recycling system improvements, helped recover more than 2 billion pounds of recyclable materials, delivered more than 2 million recycling carts to households, and shaped policies that now impact 1 in 5 Americans. Together, we’re creating measurable change that strengthens local recycling programs, keeps valuable materials in circulation, and builds a recycling system that works for everyone.

The work of transforming the U.S. recycling system is far from finished, but we know lasting change is possible when people come together around a shared purpose. Every partnership we build, every solution we advance, and every investment we make brings us one step closer to a recycling system that works for everyone.
