PRESS RELEASE: New Garbage and Recycling Carts Rolling Out Starting December 7

Whitehall, Ohio – The City of Whitehall is rolling out a new garbage and recycling program, and starting December 7 the City’s contractors will begin dropping off carts directly to Whitehall households. Homeowners need not be present to accept the cart delivery.

The dropping of the new carts marks the next step toward implementing the new cart contents only program with Local Waste Services, LLC which begins Wednesday, January 6. As part of the new program, Whitehall households will be issued two new wheeled carts—one for garbage and one for recycling. Earlier this fall, residents were invited to select their garbage cart size (choosing from a 95-, 65- or 35-gallon option). Those who did not respond will be issued a 95-gallon garbage cart, and all homes will receive a 65-gallon recycling cart. While Local Waste has increased monthly collection fees as part of the new five-year contract, the carts are free-of-charge thanks to over $200,000 in grants from the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and The Recycling Partnership.

“While dropping off the carts represents a major step toward starting our new program with Local Waste, the City is only just beginning our campaign to educate residents about the new carts, with an emphasis on increasing recycling and waste diversion community-wide,” said Megan Meyer, Community Affairs Manager. “We’re lucky to have the support of SWACO and The Recycling Partnership in these educational efforts.”

Along with the carts, each household will receive a welcome packet to acquaint them with the new cart contents only program, including a recycling magnet, “Yard Waste Only” sticker, program FAQs and a guide to Whitehall’s curbside collection services. As with the current program, garbage, recycling and yard waste collection day will continue to be on Wednesdays communitywide. While households must fit all garbage and recycling into the carts provided starting January 6, yard waste and one bulk item per week may remain outside the carts. Households may continue to set out yard waste in marked bins or paper yard waste bags. In addition to the one bulk item weekly, the City has scheduled four unlimited collection days for 2021 including May 6, July 8, October 7 and December 30.

Households who are currently renting garbage or recycling carts from Local Waste will have those collected on December 30, the last collection day of the old program. Any household with an unwanted cart, can, or recycling tote may place it at the curb for collection on any Wednesday moving forward, with a sign that states “please remove.”

“The Recycling Partnership, with support in part from the American Beverage Association and the Ohio Beverage Association, is proud to support Whitehall’s cart rollout,” said Jill Martin, Director of Community Programs for The Recycling Partnership. “We look forward to our continued work with SWACO to increase the amount of quality recyclables collected in the Central Ohio region.”
